Pencils Over Pixels
We are parents, educators, and community members of the Lower Merion School District — pro-teacher, pro-childhood, and pro-intentional technology. Operating as the group Pencils Over Pixels, we champion the prioritization of student health, data privacy, and pen-and-paper learning in our schools.
Who We Are
Pencils Over Pixels is a grassroots group of parents, students, and educators from Lower Merion. Our guiding principle is to empower the educator and protect the student.
We are pro-teacher, pro-childhood, and pro-intentional technology — we support the responsible use of technology, but are concerned that our students have become dependent on screens and apps for learning.

5 Recommendations to the Board
We are pro-teacher. Our teachers need institutional support to speak openly about technology's impact, without fear of professional consequence. Teaching students to think deeply and critically enables them to use any tool.

Publicly release all vendor contracts, privacy agreements, and aggregate screen-use data by grade and school. Parents must know which apps are used, what data is collected, and who receives it. Form an independent committee of students, parents, teachers, and board members to assess tech-use policies.
Bell-to-Bell Device Ban
Ban personal cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, and similar devices for the entire school day. This fosters learning, focus, and authentic socialization. Numerous states are already acting — let LMSD lead.
Stronger Content Filtering
Adopt an 'approved-only' model — students access only authorized educational sites. Generative AI, YouTube, social media, streaming, shopping, gaming, and messaging should be unavailable unless a teacher authorizes them for a clear educational purpose.
Teacher-Led Instruction First
Core subjects — math, reading, writing, science, social studies — should be delivered primarily through paper materials and face-to-face teaching. Technology skills should be taught only in computer labs or with shared devices. Full assistive technology support must continue under IDEA, 504, and ADA.
Opt-In Consent for Devices & Apps
Require explicit, revocable parental consent before issuing a 1:1 device or enrolling students in digital programs. COPPA requires consent for each app that collects student data. Families who decline must receive comparable instruction via books, paper, and face-to-face learning — with no penalty.

Anxiety, Depression & Mental Health
4+ hours/day of screen time is associated with 45% higher risk of anxiety and 61% higher risk of depression in children (Nature Humanities & Social Sciences, 2026). Teens with 7+ hours/day are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety (RR 2.26) or depression (RR 2.39) versus low users.
Attention & Self-Regulation
Children's attention spans have declined 12%. A 2025 Nature Scientific Reports study of 1,016 preschoolers found higher screen time was directly linked to impaired executive function — weaker working memory, less cognitive flexibility, lower inhibition control. Screen use conditions children to expect constant novelty, making real learning feel unbearable.
Handwriting = Brain Development
EEG brain scans show handwriting activates dramatically larger neural networks than typing — including the hippocampus (memory center). Replacing handwriting with keyboards in early grades interrupts the neurological development that reading and learning depend on. Graphomotor skills in kindergarten predict reading in Grade 3.
Eyesight: The Myopia Epidemic
A 2025 JAMA Network Open meta-analysis of 335,524 individuals found high computer screen use increases myopia odds by 8x. Chromebooks are computer screens used for hours before kids touch a phone. 41.9% of U.S. children are now myopic — a dramatic generational increase.
Tech Neck & Spinal Damage
At 45 degrees of forward tilt — the typical Chromebook angle — a child's spine bears 49 lbs of force. The European Spine Journal (2025) calls this a "silent pandemic." Studies show 100% of children with neck pain display this posture while using screens. Children accumulate 1,800+ hours/year in this position.
Social Skills & Teacher Relationships
Social skills are built through in-person interaction — not screens. When teachers spend class time monitoring Chromebook activity through GoGuardian instead of teaching, the student-teacher relationship — the single most important variable in educational outcomes — is eroded. 50% of parents say technology hinders their children's meaningful classroom connections.
